Coined in 1966, this style of music is often notable for its rhythmic flow, counterpoints, and \u201cmajestic\/melancholic\u201d sound (<a href=\"https:\/\/rateyourmusic.com\/genre\/baroque-pop\/\">x<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Scott Walker The Old Man`s Back Again\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N-zgdGQB4S4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott Walker began his solo career in 1967, leaving behind his pop trio the Walker Brothers and growing somewhat recluse (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2019\/04\/22\/walk-a22.html\">x<\/a>). The album <em>Scott 4<\/em> displays his ability to produce original material that tastefully weaves together his commanding vocals with impressive orchestral arrangements. \u201cThe Old Man\u2019s Back Again [Dedicated to the Neo-Stalinist Regime],\u201d released in 1969, reflects on the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia (<a href=\"https:\/\/franklycurious.com\/wp\/2020\/03\/29\/old-mans-back-again\/\">x<\/a>). Its message feels profound, even as one struggles to parse through his lyrical imagery\u2014 the feeling likely due to this arrangement of strings and a droning choir that develops behind the music\u2019s foreground. The rhythm guitar that once led the song is gradually subdued beneath these mature themes of sound.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researching this track led me down a variety of avenues, from Walker\u2019s personal life, to the Eastern Bloc, to baroque pop, etc. Consideration of the track\u2019s mixing, however, is most relevant to this course. Recordings in the 60s\/70s were mixed on analog multi-track tape, meaning people had to manually adjust the EQ and effects as the song played. It\u2019s a much more complicated process than I can explain, but all this to note that the mixing of this track is impressive. The outcome, I feel, perfectly matches the weight of its topic.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXd2TG60z0HAhAeDJYEhl1p9_J0THj7TThWiuv3nbnqw4TvSA_zhY4oqBM3oLTDOyB2Og3C3t7q2J9Fr1nkREF9AvvNBMKOkd22ZtXzmPIfv512-S8A7AYmMCB6RMmQCd-b_KPH1cQ?key=UcP_v6m1GzEIo5pw-KeFuV32\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:340px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Baroque Pop refers to a genre of music that combines rock with elements of Western classical music, such as the harpsichord or strings.
