Trick of Sound Production (and the moon)

The song Trick of the Moon by Eloise was released in 2021, but if you listen closely it sounds as if it is a live vintage recording. This song begins with some ambient noise of a woman’s laughter and distant chatter in the background. There is also a hum in the recording that was not taken out in post production, probably to retain a rustic and old feel. A raspy male voice comes in to say “how about a big act” and sound effects of thunderous applause are used to set the scene as if this is a live performance. I envision the “live performance” taking place at an old bar or cabaret based on the track’s vintage feel. The sound of people talking softens as background noise over the playing of a piano that seems to be far away from the recording device. The hum is still present in the background when the vocals come in.

Eloise sings a very simple melody with only piano accompanying her. Her voice doesn’t sound as clear as it might if it was produced with modern technique. Instead there is some rasp and fuzz to her voice that makes it seem, again, like this is a vintage recording. As she sings a few versus, background vocals accompany her and they also sound far away and fuzzy, giving the song such a cool sound that seems like it was out of an old movie or TV show. As the song continues into the chorus, a beat comes in and we are brought back to our current time period. Her vocals become more clear and the hum and other pops in the recording vanish. This song is just so cool because the post production and recording set the scene of an old live performance with a vintage style, but then transitions back to how we normally hear recording today!
