You are definitely correct about EDM. It traces its roots back to 80’s synth music – notably disco inflected european groups. Giorgio Moroder is a pioneer in this genre, and his music had a huge influence of the later EDM phenomena. Ableton’s Live software is almost specifically made for electronic music like EDM, as is Fruityloops. Apple’s Garageband comes with a ton of loops that can be used to create EDM and similar tracks.
