The song “Big Dipper” by the project “Death Grips,” is a very unique piece of music. Death Grips is an experimental hip-hop group with Andy Morin, Zach Hill, and Stefan Burnett serving as the producer, drummer, and lead vocals respectively. They released a double LP, “The Powers that B,” who’s first half was an album recorded using a series of samples sent to them by the singer, Bjork. They utilized theses samples to their fullest when crafting the beats, but the most ingenious use of them is showcased in the song “Big Dipper.” The closer for the first half of the album, the band applied many Bjork vocal samples to different parts of an electric drum kit. The resulting sound is really hard to explain. It takes many listens to even really tell what’s going on, and to this day I’m still very baffled by how they managed to capture such an oddly manic piece of music. I recommend tuning in at 2:59 onwards if you don’t want to listen to the whole song. This is where the drumming is front and center.
