Lizzy McAlpine is a singer who has gained a lot of traction over the last year. Her music typically falls in the soft-pop category, but I think that she adds some pretty unique elements to her songs. For example, in her song “Where do I go?,” in the majority of the song she sounds somewhat distant, like she recorded the song across a room. However, for the second chorus, she transitions into sounding like she recorded in a studio with high-quality equipment. This transition occurs as she sings a very personal chorus that makes the listener feel as though they are listening to her thoughts. She then transitions back to the more echoey, distant setting as she starts to sing about someone else again.
Another example of a unique approach she brings to a song is in “Reckless Driving.” This tells a love story from both the perspective of the girl and the guy. With Lizzy singing the first verse and chorus, and then Ben Kessler singing the second verse and chorus. It gets really interesting after the bridge, when both of them start to sing the chorus overlapping and from their own perspectives. The song builds and builds until it ends extremely abruptly, like they were in a car crash, which was referenced throughout the song. The song is just so unique in the sense of buildup that it creates, along with the storytelling and unexpected end.
