Sampling in Metal Music!

Where did Metal Music come from?

Metal music originated from industrial working-class areas in the United Kingdom (UK), specifically in the midlands and northern England. A large number of factories process actual metal, specifically steel, this is where the term “metal” music came from. It has its roots in blues, rock, and 1960s psychedelic rock. Metal music consists of the following components: heavily distorted guitar riffs and cords, powerful drumming, extra low-range bass notes, and aggressive or throaty vocals. Many members of some of the earliest metal bands have referenced the sound of the steel factories as a direct influence on their music. Some of the bands that are credited with pioneering metal music were: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Megadeth to name a few.

What is Sampling?

Sampling in music involves taking a section of audio from another source, and then reworking it into the creation of a new track. They are usually looped, sliced, spliced, and manipulated. It can include the entire chorus, drum beat, kick drum, snare, vocals, and basslines. Some will honor the original sample more closely, while some may tweak or further modify it by altering the pitch, tempo, and other sonic characteristics. Sampling doesn’t just have to include other songs or music it can include spoken lines from films, TV shows, and online videos.

Sampling Examples in Metal Music

My first examples of sample in metal music is Dreamsong by Ceremonial Oath and Unholy Confessions by Avenged Sevenfold. This song has also been sampled by Spirit Crusher by Death, The Poison by Bullet for my Valentine, Frostbite by Parkway Drive, and many more this was a very popular rift used.

My second example is Me Against Myself by Wage War and Disease by Beartooth. Beartooth sampled the beginning rift from Wage War.

My third example is Prowler by Iron Maiden and Between Angles and Insects by Papa Roach. Papa Roach sampled the hook/rift from Iron Maiden.
