Vienna by Billy Joel

The song “Vienna” by Billy Joel is easily one of my favorite songs ever written and here’s why:

Joel has a way of making this song feel conversational, but also mixing the spoken-word phrasing with soaring high notes, especially in the chorus when he sings “slow down”. The production works around his delicate piano playing, but also has some strings and accordions that create a European feel to it (hence the song title). The lead singer’s voice is the main component and forefront of this song. It also has some light reverb, while still maintaining a clear and conversational sound throughout.

Lyrically, it has a very positive and encouraging tone about it and makes the song feel light, not heavy and sad. The song delivers the message of patience and not rushing through life’s moments and living in the present. It can be found specifically in lyrics like “Slow down you’re doing fine” and “Vienna waits for you.” This song is a great example of how simple instruments and thoughtful production choices can create a powerful message and inspire its listener.
