Story 2: After 55 years A Vietnam Veteran Gets His High School Diploma
This story features Joseph Bond (a Vietnam veteran) and a family member of his, Tramain Crawley. It begins with Tramain remembering how shocked she was when Joseph decided to go back to school in his 50’s. Right away, the listener is pulled into a mix of humor and surprise as Joseph talks about being the oldest person in all of the buildings. The conversation then grows more emotional, leading to Joseph’s reflections on education, family promises, and pride. The only two voices are Joseph, who shares his journey of going back to school, and Tramain, who asks questions and reflects on what Joseph’s accomplishment means to both of them. The back-and-forth makes it feel both intimate and supportive. There is soft music at the beginning and end which helps set the mood. The music helps guide the emotional shift from the lighthearted jokes about Joseph’s “cool walk” to the more emotional moment when he shares about keeping his promise to his (now deceased) mother. This story is powerful because of how it layers humor, honesty, emotion, and family bonds.
