Very few shows have impacted me as much as “The Big Lez Show,” and it’s subsequent spinoff “Sassy the Sasquatch.” These shows, while meant to be a poorly-animated stoner comedy YouTube series, have some of the most profound and entertaining moments I’ve seen in a series. The entire show was animated in MS Paint, and the soundtrack (which I’ll be diving into) was recorded on only a handful of instruments by the show’s creator, Jarrad Wright. The importance of a show’s soundtrack matching the energy of what’ seen on screen is something that I believe is criminally underrated, and there are few examples that I’ve seen that do this better than the Sassy the Sasquatch series.
The show follows Sassy, an immortal sasquatch, on his journey throughout time, meeting various friends along the way. Sassy’s whimsical energy is matched in the soundtrack, with songs such as “Flying Dream” and “New Cycle” providing Sassy with upbeat rhythms as he enjoys some of the happier moments of his journey. Wright uses guitars, ukeleles, and a kalimba to embody Sassy’s energy, putting the viewer in the same joyful mood our protagonist is in. Tracks such as “Storm” (my personal favorite) are more melancholic, matching up with moments of personal reflection and even loneliness, which Sassy experiences from time to time on his journey.
What all of these tracks have in common, however, is their simplicity. Most songs only have one or two instruments playing throughout, and stick to relatively basic melodies. The tracks are meant to suppliment what’s occuring on screen, perfectly matching the mood while at the same time blending into the background, avoiding becoming too much of a distraction. It’s clear that the show’s content and music were written by the same person, as they fit together like pieces of a beautiful, trippy puzzle. By developing a simple yet effective soundtrack to pair with his low-budget animation, Wright created one of the most impactful show soundtracks I’ve ever listened to. If you have a couple hours to kill (and don’t mind some crass humor), I highly recommend watching both “The Big Lez Show” and “Sassy the Sasquatch.”
