Song Covers and Exact Sound

I heard this cover of one of my favorite Bring Me The Horizon songs the other day. After hearing this and really enjoying it, I couldn’t help but think about all the differences between this cover and the real song. There are just so many tiny differences yet we can still hear identify that it is the same song. The guitar tones are different, the voices are different, the harmonics of the guitar are not the exact same notes, and the drums sound slightly different even. I find it interesting how much it takes to make the exact same sound. It really made me think about how much goes into making music down to the smallest details. Different instruments will have different sounds, and everyone’s voice is uniquely individual and cannot be fully replicated.

This also led to the thought that to record music everything must be in a specific environment to sound the same as the original. Even the space in the room can affect the sound of the final recording. When I did my presentation for the class, I thought about mentioning this as well because it is extremely difficult to hear what speakers sound like without listening to them directly. You must have a microphone that can capture the sound perfectly, as well as speakers that will sound exactly like the ones you are trying to hear. I think audio is something that is uniquely difficult to replicate and I enjoy the different sound that comes from speakers, different recording settings, and all the details in between.
