Musical artist known as Lil Hero is a well-known underground hip-hop artist who generates sounds through not only samples but her own voice. Her music simply resembles the freedom that is garnered from creativity, as it seeks to often strays away from traditional sounds and mixes. Hip-hop is a genre that is generally based on beats and rhythm, and Lil Hero does this very well. She also holds elements that tend to be on the “poppy” (Pop Style) side with heavy electronic manipulation. These sounds are often modified to a point where they make the audience perceive the musical construction rather than the message in the song initially.
Lil hero creates atmospheric aspects that then play into the sonic tone of happiness, carefreeness, and upbeat energy. The electrical manipulations she uses throughout her process mainly consist of autotune and beats from beat marketplaces online. Typically, her sound consists of atmospheric synths that are accompanied by 808 beats and kicks that are snappy kicks. She uses a home studio to record most of her mixes and does so by recording/editing in three main sectors. The main vocals and lyrics, backups and ad-lib vocals, and the editing of pitches in either of the previously mentioned sections.
Culturally speaking, the genre of Hip-Hop tends to be less focused on the sound curation and more so focused on the message being portrayed. Lil Hero recognizes the catchiness aspect of music and understands that, through any genre, you can make that happen. It may not come off as traditional Hip-Hop initially, but since the artist incorporates the technical aspects of the genre, there is no debate that it is Hip-Hop. It is ultimately up to the audience perceiving it. The process of how she creates her music is also fairly similar to many Hip-Hop songs. It is just the way she executes it as being more fun and “girly,” if you will.
As far as her “sound,” as I mentioned earlier, it is manipulated enough to sound almost like a video game soundtrack. It is less raw and more modified, and this essentially allows the sound to come through the voice of her character and brand rather than herself. A reason I make this point, too, is that she typically has a theme that she follows for every song. All of the details I mentioned, from recording to sound, earlier play into this theme and portrayal of who is known to be “Lil hero.” I say this too because there is little known about the artist herself, but her music stands as a representation of something consistent in the way it sounds, in the messages it exhibits, and in the overall execution.
If you want to hear the sound I am referring to, you can check out her top few songs that have consistently gone viral.
