The song “Renegades” is by the Japanese Rock Band One Ok Rock. The song was released on April 16 of this year and was produced by Jamil Kazmi, written by Takahrio Moriuchi, Ed Sheeran and Masato Hayakawa. The song serves as the main theme for the live the movie Rurouni Kenshin: The Final. It’s sort of an alternative rock and pop rock song that shows aggressive sound dominance amplifying the defiance and rebellious spirit it exudes during the song. The song pretty much uses the same instruments throughout the 4 minutes and 5 seconds length with the some bass and rhythm guitar along with the drums that have an added pop in the back half of the song. Though it seems to use some kind of synthesized violin background noise to give it a more alternative effect. The voice is also changed a bit but it uses the correct pitch and adjustments in audio quality to make the song seem in rhythm.
As far as how it is used in the song, it starts off with that violin background that I mentioned then its the top of its wavelength for about two second then starts slowly fading off till you hear a wind type sound that signals the start of the slow consistent drum beat that accompanies this verse. you also hear the guitar as the vocals go on. then it goes into a higher pitched, probably using some kind of echo and ambiance that give the vocals during this faster paced music a kind of build up that leads into the main chorus. This is also the first instance of vocal changes. It then stops for a spilt second and comes in with the immediate dominance of the sound the seems to spilt the sky. the intensity of the guitar and drums are amplified to the max, though it’s very clear that this was edited and done inside of a studio. Near the end of the first chorus there is the “ohhh” sound that is popular in most rock songs. you can hear a bit of overdubbing to give it a more ambient yet resonant sound that echos inside your mind as you listen to the song.
The second time it goes back to that steady guitar and drum beat, the drum beat in particular as more pop to it it seems like , emphasizing the energy inside the song. There also is a dub of cheers in the background after the singer says “its not our fate”. After this there isn’t much to mention about the tempo of the song. The song is in the F minor key and goes at 154 BPM, there is change of instruments and speed to keep the attention toward the beat drops in the song. Overall, I think the song has real intensity and resonance that many people would love to hear to pump themselves up.
