October Post- R&B is NOT Dead

In 2020, Jasmine Sullivan released Lost Ones. Lost One is the lead song on Jasmine Sullivan’s album Heaux Tales. This Rhythm & Blues song is about the consequences of being careless with someone’s heart. Lost One was recorded in a professional studio. Like other songs recorded in studios, the audio on this song is very crisp. There are no background noises or muffling sounds. Therefore, it can be concluded that some type of mic muffler was put on the mic that Jasmine Sullivan recorded this song with. The song was also recorded in a studio with some type of padding on the wall to block out any external noise. The song’s lyrics were written by Jasmine Sullivan and the song was produced by Dave Watson.
The actual song uses the same background instrumentals. The background melody is the looped sound of a muffled guitar. Then, Jasmine Sullivan’s voice is layered on top of the melody. I personally love the background melody because of the muffled guitar noise. The song sounds like the guitar was recorded with a mic that was far away from the actual guitar. I don’t know how they achieved the muffled guitar sound, but I am assuming they used some type of sound effect. This song has left an impression on the R&B community.
This song is simple yet soulful and I think the simplicity of the song is what makes the song stand out. It is also interesting to note that at some points in the song, Jasmine’s voice is layered on top of one another to create an echo effect and add depth to the song. For example, when she sings the lyrics “try not to have too much fun, ” her voice creates an echo effect. People often say R&B is dead, but this song is a prime example that R&B is not dead.
