The hit song off the soundtrack of the 2008 blockbuster book adaptation Twilight, Bella’s Lullaby is a piece of music most young people could recognize by ear. This being an orchestral piece of score there are a variety of instrument types that come together in this piece. Strings and percussion are the two that play in the most prevalently. Orchestras are sometimes recorded with a single microphone placed behind the conductor, but I don’t think that is the case here.
Throughout the song the piano is featured most prominently. It leads the melody distinctly from the rest of the instruments and at a different volume than it would be on just a single mic, unless the piano was right next to it. I believe this song was recorded on multiple mics or even in multiple recording sessions for each section of the orchestra and mixed back together for the final product. That is how they get the string section to almost melt into the background and have the piano so prominently focused. No matter how it was produced, this haunting piece of soundtrack was masterfly done.
