Sun, Snow, and Sound

For this month’s post, I wanted to talk about a concept/sound that is very sentimental to me! I grew up in Michigan and each year I looked forward to the snow. When I moved to NC, I was sad that the state didn’t experience snow in the same way as the North does. Fortunately, we have had a few winters that have had the same Michiganian feel to them!

Simply put, the sun doesn’t have a specific sound. It is much too far away for us to hear, even if it did radiate noise. This same idea goes for the snow. Snow itself doesn’t have a specific sound, but what I want to focus on what the sounds surrounding each idea. For example, when I think of sun, waves, music, splashes, etc. immediately come to mind. When I think of snow, I think of the silence and the very very quiet sound of the snowflakes landing upon one another. I often also think about sledding and the crunch that the snow makes when walking in it in snow boots.

These ideas about sun and snow are not limited to weather. These aspects can also be applied to other ideas such as cities or any inanimate object. The point that I am getting at here is that we associate certain feelings and certain thoughts with certain sounds. While snow and sun cannot exhibit sounds, we associate sounds with their connotation. Paying attention to these connections is important and it allows us to recognize the ways in which we connect one thing to another.

While writing this, I recognize that I particularly think about snow and sun because of my moving from MI to NC. I wonder what other similar connections my classmates make with other things and/or objects. The more connections we are able to make with sound and its surrounding concepts, the more we learn about ourselves and others. What other connections to sound can you make that are similar to my examples of snow and sun?
