Slowed and Reverb

There’s something alluring about a slowed and reverbed song.

For me its almost a magnetic pull that draws you into its hypnotic embrace. The technique was once known as “chopped n screwed,” before Gen Z got a hold to its mystique. Regardless of what one may know it as it has a transformative power that takes familiar melodies and imbues them with an otherworldly quality.

I’ll share some of my favorites:

Beyoncé’s Blue
Taylor Swift’s Cardigan
Lana Del Rey’s Young and Beautiful
Beach House’s Space Song

It’s a low-lift editing technique, but it allows listeners to better focus on the lyricism of the artist rather than the fancy sometimes over-production happening at regular speed. There’s even online generators that allows you to take any song of your choosing to slow down and reverb.

There’s also sped up versions of songs, and of course atmospheric POV (raining, at a party, etc) that can be sped up or slowed down as well. I think these editing styles allow the listeners to have fun with the music in a way the artist or production may have never intended.

You’ll hear most of these editing styles on social apps like TikTok, and most of the time once a listener hears it sped up/slowed down it helps push the song on the music charts, even though the artist isn’t making any money from TikTok streaming, but that’s another conversation.
