The Music of Minecraft

The soundtrack of a video game is immensely important in building the world and setting the tone of the game. In the game of Minecraft, players have the choice to play in creative mode or survival mode. Regardless of players choices every biome they encounter in the overworld is accompanied by ambient music that fit the area of the game they are currently in. What makes the music of Minecraft so special is that not only does it not distract players from the game but it actively build the world they are in and changes the tone and atmosphere from place to place. When players are in the nether, which is a dangerous realm in the game, the background music become foreboding, as if warning the player for what they are about to encounter.

The background music for the video game Minecraft consists of two soundtracks written and composed by German artist Daniel Rosenfeld. Rosenfeld was the sole contributor to the music of Minecraft until 2020 when other collaborators contributed to ongoing updates. The two soundtracks released were titled Minecraft Alpha and Minecraft Beta. While both albums serve as ambient music for the video game and contain no lyrics, Rosenfeld describes his Minecraft Beta album as sounding generally darker tonally.
