When going to the dentist, I fear the worst. I fear that they will hurt my teeth or tell me I need to be operated on. It is not fun to attend the dentist, but it is more comforting to put my mind at ease to think of the sounds of the tools and less of what is happening inside of my mouth.
During my last visit, I stuck to this mindset and truly focused on the different sounds of the tools they were using to clean my teeth. I was able to hone in on the instruments used on my teeth and how it produced high pitched knocking sounds, the screeching of them scraping the built-up calculus off my teeth, and the whisk of the air sucking the gunk out. I heard toothbrush machine and its nonstop sound that is produced from it being on power.
Putting my mind in a place where I could focus on the highness and lowness, and light and heavy sounds eased my worries. I found a new sense of peace in going to the dentist, and it is something I will continue to do as I am afraid of other things as well.
