Lake Effect Kid – Fall Out Boy

In 2008, Fall Out Boy released a small, mostly disregarded mixtape called Welcome to the New Administration. This EP was only released virtually and it’s essential purpose was to promote the band’s fourth upcoming album, Folie à Deux. The song “Lake Effect Kid” was feature on this mixtape. As it was only a demo, the song was unpolished and sounded raw. In 2018, Fall Out Boy released a rerecorded version of “Lake Effect Kid” for another EP, this time as an official track, not a demo.

This specific video plays both versions of the song at the same time, matched up synchronously. It is highly recommended that listeners wear headphones to enjoy this mashup. The video really highlights the raw and more “edgy” sound of Fall Out Boy from 2008. Patrick Stump’s vocals are less calculated and more spur of the moment. In contrast, the 2018 version sounds much more planned and thought out. The sound is crisp, clean, and the balanced. Patrick’s voice has also developed and can hit the higher notes, which seems to have increased since the original recording. This may be because of technological advancements within recording media, or simply because of the band’s growth itself.
