The ridiculously cool series: “SOUND OF TWO”

For anyone who doesn’t know of the group Vulfpeck, in addition to watching this video you should take some time to look into their group and all they have done. Being a modern age jazz funk soul pop group, they are always looking to the classics for inspirations. Jack Stratton, a core member of the group decided to highlight some of their inspirations and videos they love by overlaying the two and seeing how they sounded together. The end product was a series called “SOUND OF TWO” and are some of the most fun short music videos to watch.

The video linked above of Bernard Purdie & Ethel Caffie-Austin is one of my favorites of the series and is one of the best mixed ones in my opinion. On the left side of the video you have Bernard Purdie performing and teaching on a project from 1993 titled “groove master”. His hope was to show off how he finds a pocket in his drumming and how important it is to pay around with your beat when you get to that point. The video on the right is from the infamous Ethel Caffie-Austin from a project titled “Learn To Play Gospel Piano” from 2003. Here she is breaking down the cords of classic gospel songs she plays and how actually easy it is to transition from song to song with a basic understanding of the common chords used and playing styles you hear. despite 10 years separating these two projects and them even being on different styles of music, this video highlights how often music can be paired together unintentionally. It creates a beautiful message all while creating something fun in the process. Lots of music lovers should take inspiration from projects like this because you never know what coincidence you may stumble upon.
