My Name is is a song by Eminem from his second album The Slim Shady LP. The song contains sample of Labs Siffre’s track “I Got The…” who actually got Eminem and Dr. Dre to change some of the lyrics in the song when it was released due to the certain issues he took with the language within the song. This song has been re-released and remixed with a bunch of different sounds but this song specifically is the 1999 version. The song starts out with turn tables being scratched giving off the feel of a rap song then goes into the first verses of the song. The audio of the vocals goes into what typically came from Eminem and of his time with the vocals not really being auto-tuned but there definitely was overdubbing multiple times. He also uses a kind of sarcastic higher pitched sounding voice to give off the comedy of what he is actually saying. He also uses multiple voices from both himself and Dr. Dre. There is also background noises of a gagging sound and tearing sounds and screams that are definitely edited in the studio to not take away from the main instrumental and audio of the song that gives it a more narrative type feel. It also is a point to mention that most of the background noises that I said are from Eminem himself, not a lot if even any at all were taken from other sources.
Also during the part where he goes into the My Name is lyrics, you can hear the same three sounds that almost seem like Hyperbole’s or just plain exaggerations in normal conversations with the “huh”, “what”, and “who”. The sequence ends with the chicka chicka sound which was prevalent in most rap songs or what most people thought to be apart of rap songs back then. The constant beat throughout the song with the bass and guitar riff gave it a rhythmic beat that stayed the same but allowed for it to have differences with all the background noises and sound effects that gave it flavor. A little past midway through the song he stops the beat he seems like and you can only hear his voice, but if you listen closely you can still hear it for the second or two that it is not playing, it is just edited low enough in the background that, when it comes up it seems more natural. None of the audio in the song was played recording a guitar or pianos like maybe in other songs, it was all edited up in the studio with a mike that had little reverb but was studio issued to allow that clear and crisp audio we hear in the song. This is a song that will probably be better played in a room that is small without any holes like in the Ted Talk in class, it is more suited for car audio as the base and reverb from the speakers give it a more intense feel then it would in a bigger building. The final thing I will say is that it is definitely one of the more iconic songs of its time.
